Build-up to a Big Weekend

Things on this blog may be a bit quiet over the next few days as I’ll be out and about covering the fantastic Tall Ships Race 2014 which from today until Sunday will be based here in Bergen.

The city has put on an amazing series of events to compliment the main attraction, which is of course, the ships themselves.  There will be a series of free concerts ranging from the traditional and appropriate sea shanties to heavy metal all taking place at various specially constructed stages in the city centre and around the harbour area.  All the harbourfront restaurants and bars have extra seating outdoors thanks to our fantastic summer.  There are all sorts of stalls and marquees selling souvenirs, foods from around the globe and, of course, Tall Ships memorabilia.

The event has also proved to be a magnet for buskers of all ages, sizes and shapes, genders and abilities so there is a wealth of street entertainment to be found all over the place.

The following are a few shots taken this evening of some of the stars of the show, the Tall Ships, before we can see them in their fully-sailed glory on Sunday…

  1. Truly amazing images and a reminder of the glory days of sail. Yes, i know the new container ships have greatly reduced costs of shipping and have made it easier for all of us to have “stuff” but you just can’t beat the old sailing vessels for beauty and for the plain old love of the ocean.
