One of the noticeable things about wandering down by the lake the other day, apart from the obvious appearance of flowers and leaves, was the increased activity amongst the birdlife.  Most of the species have been there all winter but there is definitely an increase in liveliness, perhaps some earlier nest-building and breeding in the case of the Hooded Crows and the winter return of the Whooper Swans for breeding purposes.  More Magpies seem to be around than this time last year and there is a definite feeling of change in the air…

A Hooded Crow flies past some Whooper Swans with something in his mouth for nest building.
The ever-present Mallards are as lively as always.
Plenty of Magpies are in evidence down by the lake too.
Another Hoodie takes a rest from all this springtime activity.
